It's early days yet but the
Mirror's Edge reviews are trickling in and are so far quite favourable. The major complaint however seems to be the length of the single player mode being put somewhere between 6-8 hours. That wouldn't be too bad but with very little else to offer, it begins to be a problem. There is barely a multiplayer mode as all you do is run against 'ghosts' of other players that they have uploaded. Also you have a time trial mode that speaks for itself and that seems about it. For £39.99 I'm not sure whether that's really good value for money. Another gripe is the combat system. I personally think people are viewing the game as a FPS and because the game doesn't focus on that it's naturally weak. Not weak because it's inherently bad but because it's not the area where you're meant to get you 'kicks' from – the free running parts take care of that. Something that puzzles me is the aesthetics. Like I said in my demo impressions, the intro movie is a stylized vector animation where as the game is trying to replicate real life. From what I've seen, the game continues to do this throughout. Sometimes you're confronted with vector animations to tell the story and other points you see it through the eye's of Faith, the games lead.
But lets not forget all the game does right; the feeling of speed, the 'effortless' free running, the constant desire to better your previous time through levels and simply the fact that it's a new and interesting genre that hasn't been explored so deeply. A full review of the game should be up early next week so stay tuned!
