Boobs! Either you love them or, well, I don't think people would hate them, just be indifferent to them. Anyway, last month an image of Faith from the skippity-hoppity game Mirror's Edge did the usual rounds on the internet. But instead of official images for over enthusiastic gamers to, um, enjoy, a fake fan art image was created to show how she would look if she were created for an Eastern market. Faith's eyes are larger and she has a big 'ol pair of tats because that is apparently what the East prefer in the leading ladies where, I've been told, that we in the West prefer smaller norks. One of the game's producers, Tom Farrer, has responded to this by telling MTV "We really wanted to get away from the typical portrayal of women in games, that they're all just kind of tits and ass in a steel bikini. We wanted her to look athletic and fit and strong [enough] that she could do the things that she's doing." Personally I like what D.I.C.E. (the games developers) have done with Faith – make her athletic ability and parkour talents her main features rather than just create another big-titted character who would get lost in a sea of over boobed video game leads. Castlevania Judgement, the franchise's first adventure on the Wii, was in the form of a beat-em-up and had a young female character who was more moderately-sized. But she fascinated over her foes' rib cushions by staring at them (with the obligatory close up) and even called them "a sacred gift." Steady on! You can see for yourself in the embedded video after the break.
I find the whole thing a bit silly. Hopefully more developers will follow the lead of D.I.C.E. and create their female characters more true-to-life. Although I'm not holding my breath... Unless I fall into that sea of boobs I mentioned earlier...
And yes I appreciate the irony seeing as my username is HootyMcBoob...
