It gets better

Some of you may be aware about the It gets better project that's been running for a while now.  It arose as a result of a spate of suicides by schoolkids who were bullied because people believed them to be gay.  Whether they were or not is immaterial, but remembering my own experiences in growing up and realising that I'm gay in a fairly accepting country in a not-too-bad community, it was still really very hard to come to terms with being different on such a level that can lead to such bullying.

So, it's important that this project's message gets out and gets seen.  If there are people unsure about their futures, if things are looking grim because of feeling as though you're so different, if people are being bullied for any reason, not least sexuality, then the message is clear: it gets better.  And it does.  Once you get out of that claustrophobic school atmosphere and start to grow into your own person, you gain the strength to leave the negative aspects of your life behind, you start to be able to tell people to fuck off when they get on at you for any reason.

And the games industry is very much a heterosexual, predominantly male place to be, for end users as well as those who work in the development of games and so far, one company in the industry has added its voice to the project to let struggling youths know that it gets better.  It may be no surprise that it's those responsible for same-sex marriage fest franchise The Sims, EA.  I don't think it should be considered such a brave move, though undoubtedly it has been seen as such, but personally, I think it's wimpish and uncaring for other big-hitters in the gaming industry not to follow suit, but sadly, I doubt we'd see Activision or Rockstar doing the same, however, I'd love to be wrong about this.

So, ladies and gentlemen, I give you EA.
