Skyrim 'very comfortable' on Xbox says Todd Howard

"Which is best console or PC gaming" is an old debate that, for the forseeable future, will not go away. Now it seems Bethesda has weighed in their opinion regarding this classic argument as they say the development of their new Elder Scrolls title is "very comfortable" on Xbox 360 and also claim the ageing console has some advantages over a PC. In an interview with Edge game director Todd Howard detailed how developing Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a lot easier working on consoles but did acknowledge PC hardware has "moved on a lot".

His exact statement in regards to the overall look of the game is that it will be "better on PC. The PC has moved on a lot. With the kinds of things we do where we are streaming a lot, even your average hard drive on your average PC these days is crazy fast at ripping data". He went on to say that "the negative on PC is that there are still a lot of layers of API before you can look at the hardware. So we might be able to get the data faster on PC, but what we do with that data is still easier on [Xbox]360 and PS3 where we can look directly at the memory registers and do what we want".

Bethesda are so confident in their claims that they are opting to show the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim at trade shows as it is much easier to demo.

The game is due out on 11 November 2011 on all major platforms.

Regardless of data speeds and graphical qualities, as long as Skyrim works on your computer, you should get the PC version of the game. Neither the PS3 or the Xbox 360 will have access to player-made mods, and the Elder Scrolls modding community is massive.

That aside, I think one of the main reasons why Bethesda is using the Xbox 360 more in demos and such is because of the bad reputation the Elder Scrolls games have with consoles. People have always complained about controls and such with Oblivion and Morrowind, and I think Bethesda are trying to point out that they've done it well this time.
