Next box

So, it's probably going to be 2014 before we see the next Microsoft console, but what's it going to be called?  The Xbox 360 is still going strong right now and its graphical capabilities, though lagging behind high-end PCs and Macs, are still enough for today's console-developed games.

Here at UFO Gamers, we colloquially refer to Microsoft's next-gen console as Xbox 720, but will it really be called that?  It's a cumbersome name and doesn't seem to live up to any next-gen hype, so I think it's out.  Xbox 3 is out too, because the PS3 is getting long in the tooth as well and it wouldn't be good marketing to bring something out with the 3 in the name, when Sony may well be releasing a PlayStation 4 around the same time.

So it'll have to go in another direction altogether, but what?  Presuming it'll stick to the Xbox title, could Xbox 1080 be a contender?  It ticks a box by being a multiple of 360 and another box by matching full HD on current TVs.  But again, it's cumbersome to say, even if it is less cumbersome than 720 by one syllable.  So perhaps we'll go in the direction of Natal or Kinect, with a swish, focus-meeting-spawned name, like Xbox Gamma (ie, the third) or some other name that's contrived to sound cool but has its derivation deeply rooted in the obscure.

So, what do you think?  Let us know what you think they'll call the Next Box.  Here, for your viewing pleasure, is an artist's impression of how the next console will look.  I think you'll find it breathtaking and futuristic.
