Review: inFamous DEMO

In a post-apocalyptic New York-esque setting known simply as 'the city', inFamous plays out the story of Cole, a man who was struck by some unusual form of energy during the aforementioned apocalypse, causing him to have a rather interesting relationship with electricity.  He can harness it safely, project it as bullets, grenades, shields and shock waves, he can strike people with it and do a whole host of rather jolly fun things besides.

The demo, which shows wonderfully its open world, parcour-flavoured immenseness, is short enough to make you want the game, and long enough to, erm, make you want the game.  First off, I found the controlls to be a bit fiddly, but then, I wasn't aware that Cole was so versatile in his abilities.  He can grab onto a great deal of things throughout 'the city' and make use of anything but the sheerest of surfaces, meaning that he can scale buildings quite easily, so long as there are legitimately-placed window ledges, pipes and what-not.  It looks beautifully detailed, unlike another game which has a similar flavour but lighter gameplay and significantly less to shout about, Spider Man 3.

While you may not go web slinging all over 'the city', the parcour element really makes light work of getting around and though he has these electrifying superpowers, Cole is far from invincible and I would state that actually, he is a little fragile.  Stand too close to one of your own electrical grenades and you will die instantly.  Taking bullets from the hooded enemies will cause your screen to become bloodied and greyscale as in Gears of War, Killzone 2 and other such games, but you do recover to full health by avoiding the attacks for a while.

There's a good/bad, blue/red, hero/villain thing in there as well, but the demo doesn't make a big deal of it, though the game itself does, but I shan't mention it here since the demo did not focus on that at all.

The game looks pretty good, really nothing to complain about and it has a very good mix of oppressive, drab delapidation of 'the city' crossed with the clear pizzazz of its former glory.  All in all, a fantastic-looking game that I'm very much looking forward to; a surprise entrant into my wishlist.
