Quick review: Cat Physics (iPhone)

Not long ago was it that I received an iPhone (thank you LorD), and since, I have been entertaining myself with the fairly cheap, if not free, applications it has to offer and only yesterday was it that I came across Cat Physics; a free iPhone application created by Donut Games. I had read some plausible and positive things about Donut Games and the majority of customer reviews for Cat Physics were mostly four or five stars, so I went ahead and downloaded it and was not let down.

Cat Physics is ultimately a physics-based puzzler, in which you must try to move a ball from one cat to another in as few moves as possible in order to gain a higher score. As you progress throughout the game, the obstacles, layout of the levels and position of each cat will make your (what could be conceived as simple) goal much, much more difficult to achieve. Each level contains a number of arrows (it can range from one to five) which, when touched, will move your ball in that direction. A series of obstacles including, fans, glass, trap doors, switches, teleports and barriers are also littered throughout the game, making it all that more challenging.

The game is based on a lot of trial and error and there were frequent levels that got me in a pickle, but that is the fun of it. The challenge is that the most obvious route isn't necessarily the right one, so it's up to the player to devise the best route with the shortest possible distance. Guaranteed the earlier levels are incredibly simple, the overall level designs are very well thought out and created. The levels offer a three star system based on your performance and your total score, it also offers a replay factor to go back to those tricky levels in order to try and get the well-deserved three stars. An online leaderboard is also available.

The interaction and use of the touch screen is executed extremley well, although a frequent problem regarding iPhone games involves the aspect that occasionally you can't see what the hell you are doing because your finger is in the way. Most of the time, that really isn't an issue in Cat Physics, although at times when positioning the arrows it may require some luck and a lot of precision, which may get a little frustrating.

The music is great and the sound effects of the cats provides a rather cute aspect to the game. There are fifty unique levels and for what it is, Cat Physics is a lot of fun, with both challenging and rewarding features. The game is free and available from the app store now. Go get it while you can. Meow!
