Quick review: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS)

With E3 in the past it’s time for me to stop drooling over what’s coming soon and get back to playing what I was drooling over at last year's E3. And what better way to come back to the present than by playing a timeless classic reinvented for the Nintendo 3DS; The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Hyrule is in danger and you, the hero of time must take up your master sword and ocarina to save the kingdom from the evil Ganondorf… again. Because essentially the game is exactly the same with a few tweaks here and there. But that’s what is so great about it! Nintendo have released the same game we all know and love but only added slight improvements (I just wish the same could be said about Goldeneye 2010).

The areas and dungeons have the same layout, but the character models and some of the items and weapons have vastly improved visuals. The 3D on the 3DS is just mind blowing as it is but, as with all new technology they only scratch the surface to start out then improve as time flows. Even as a fairly new console, Zelda’s 3D features are out of this world. Corridors feel long and narrow and enemy projectiles come out in your face. The control scheme has also been tweaked by having the touch screen as your inventory. You can choose weapons, items, look at your map and play the ocarina all with a tap of a stylus, making the game run smoothly without having to hit pause all the time like in the Nintendo 64 original. The game also makes good use of the 3DS tilt function which helps with aiming your bow or hookshot.

Ocarina of Time is one of my personal top ten games of all time so when I heard it was being released again in 3D, I knew I’d be in GAME, on the day of release with my card in hand. No more scrambling through Ebay pages looking for N64 wires or playing a glitching emulator! The themes and quests are very nostalgic and for such a large game I’m impressed it fits so well onto such a small cartridge.

If you’ve never played this classic (where have you been!?) and you have a 3DS, then now is the perfect time to become acquainted with one of the greatest epics in Nintendo's library. But for those of you who played it religiously and skipped doing any homework after school, you will probably shoot through it in no time as I did. BUT! Never fear! Upon completing the game you unlock the masters quest! (first available on the Nintendo GameCube release.) All keys and items are shuffled about and you’ll find yourself playing a whole new game. There’s also a boss mode which is needless to say awesome.

I strongly recommend this masterpiece to anyone with a Nintendo 3DS. And let’s face it… there’s not much else coming out for it for a while.

5/5
